A 22-year-old Fort Benning soldier died Sunday after he was found unresponsive in his barracks, a post spokesman said Tuesday.

The soldier was identified as Spc. Matthew R. Woods, who was found in his barracks and later pronounced dead by paramedics.

Woods was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment in the 3rd Infantry Divison’s 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team.

No foul play is suspected in the soldier’s death, said Maj. Ellis Gales Jr., a public affairs spokesman for the brigade.

Officials are awaiting the results of an autopsy.

The spokesman said the soldier’s barracks were at Kelley Hill, where he had a private room in a suite he shared with another soldier.

Woods was from Lyman, N.H. He entered the Army in January 2009 as a cavalry scout.

After training at Fort Knox, Ky., he was assigned to the 3rd Brigade in May 2009.

Gales said the brigade has planned a private service at Kelley Hill Chapel for the soldiers.

The death remains under investigation.
