A Fort Benning soldier accused of having sex with a 14-year-old girl pleaded guilty Tuesday and was sentenced to eight years in prison, followed by seven years’ probation, authorities said.

Adrian Sproul, 29, faced charges of child molestation and statutory rape. However, the molestation charge was dropped by prosecutors when Sproul agreed to plead guilty to the other charge, court officials said.

A Columbus police detective said Sproul admitted to having consensual sex with the girl in May. Sproul told investigators he had been drinking and was intoxicated when the sex occurred.

Police said the two also had been sending each other sexually explicit photos of themselves. The girl’s mother said she thinks the relationship began in early May.

Public defender Charles Lykins said Sproul listed his occupation as an Army Ranger.

Sproul must register as a sex offender upon his release from prison, officials said.
