2-Minute Warning

Manning a free agent

Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts severed ties last week after he spent 14 seasons as the team’s starting quarterback. Manning leaves behind the legacy of four MVPs and a Super Bowl victory with the Colts, who are clearly investing in either Stanford’s Andrew Luck or Baylor’s Robert Griffin III as their future quarterback.

NFL experts speculate the Miami Dolphins will be the team that goes after Manning the hardest, but so far Manning has only visited the Denver Broncos and Arizona Cardinals.

Manning has said he thinks he will end up with one of those two teams. But the Dolphins, Tennessee Titans, Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks could also express serious interest in Manning.

Rams trade No. 2 pick Meanwhile, in other NFL news, the St. Louis Rams traded their No. 2 draft pick to the Washington Redskins, who were at No. 6 in the NFL draft. The Rams have clearly made a statement that they believe Sam Bradford is their quarterback of the future as the organization would have had a chance to select either Luck or Griffin III. The Redskins paid a high price to acquire the No. 2 slot, which could ultimately make the Rams a dangerous contender in coming years if Bradford performs to expectations. The Rams will get three additional first-round draft picks and a second-round pick.

Madness ready to tip off The NCAA tournament will begin Thursday after the 68-team men’s field was selected Sunday night. Kentucky, as expected, earned the No. 1 overall seed in the South bracket. Syracuse, North Carolina and Michigan State earned the other three No. 1 seeds. Many originally predicted Kansas to be a No. 1 seed, but Michigan State was deservedly given the advantage after defeating Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship game.

Michigan State began the season unranked, much like Florida did when it won the 2006 national championship. The Spartans lost two starters to graduation and another to injury. They lost their first two games of the season, but finished 27-7 with a Big Ten championship. It goes to show that Tom Izzo is one of the very best coaches in basketball. And when Michigan State gets into the tournament, whether it’s a No. 1 seed or No. 16, the team has a way of making it to the Final Four. I expect the Spartans to make it again this year and maybe even win the whole thing.
