A mother was charged earlier this week by Columbus police in connection with the death of her infant son, reports state.

Jonaida Nieves-Perez, 20, is charged with one count of second-degree cruelty to children. The charges stem from the March 31 death of 2-month-old Emanuel Kadene Thomas, police said.

According to police, an ambulance responded to a Plateau Drive home about 6:30 a.m. March 31 because Thomas wasn’t breathing. The infant was taken to The Medical Center, where he died just after 7 a.m.

Police say they began investigating the death. That investigation led to Nieves-Perez’s arrest about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Reports state Nieves-Perez was criminally negligent in supervising her son, which led to his death.

Nieves-Perez was in the Muscogee County Jail Friday morning under $5,000 bond, jail records state.
