GHSA Class A girls tennis tournament, second round: Brookstone rolls over Telfair County to reach state quarterfinals

Published: May 1, 2012

The Brookstone Lady Cougars shook off the effects of the summer-like heat Tuesday afternoon to roll over Telfair County 4-0 in the second round of the Class A state tennis tournament.

This was the third time, the Lady Cougars beat Telfair County in the second round. They also won in 2006 (3-1) and 2007 (4-0).

"We played fairly well," Brookstone coach Mary Lynne Cumiskey said.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Brookstone, which will host Savannah Country Day on Thursday

in the quarterfinal round at 9:30 a.m. SCD beat Irwin County on Monday.

The Lady Cougars have won their past three meetings with SCD: 4-1 in the 2010 quarterfinals; 3-1 in the 2007 finals and 3-2 in the 2002 quarterfinals.

"I feel like we have the goods. We have the shots. We have the weapons. We have the physical and mental ability to beat this next team," Cumiskey said. "But I am always telling them that when you get out there, it depends on who wants to play, who is ready.

"I have always told the girls, 'I don't want you to rely on anyone else to win; rely on your self.' The further you get in the state tournament, the more the nerves are around."

In Tuesday's match, Henssey Ngo beat Natalie Seabolt 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for the first point.

At No. 3 singles, Rachel Levy secured the second point with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Lindsey Bowen.

Avery Hudson clinched the match at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ashley Evans.

Jessica Lewis and Abby White also won at No. 1 doubles, beating Deja Lester and Caroline Lewis 6-3, 6-2.

Telfair County's No. 2 doubles team of Blair Pilkinton and Brittney Royal was leading Hendley Badock and Rosie Jeffery 7-6 (7-5), when the match was pulled.
