Janie Weed ran down a long fly ball off the bat of Logan Coan with two runners on base for the final out in a 3-1 Russell County victory Thursday over Tallassee in the Alabama High School Athleic Association Class 5A Area 4 tournament.
Tallassee defeated Valley, also 3-1, in the first game Thursday to advance to play the Warriors, the No. 1 seed. Tallassee will play Valley today, with the winner having to defeat Russell County twice for the Area 4 championship.
Jessica Argue pitched into the seventh inning without giving up a run but allowed a one-out double to Paige Meadows in the top of the seventh inning. Letoria Williams followed with a single off Argue's glove, putting runners at first and third. Argue coaxed a strikeout for the second out, and Williams stole second base. Kiara Spencer's infield single scored Meadows to make it 3-1 with runners again on first and third before Weed's running catch ended the threat.
"The minute she turned and ran and had that calm look on her face, I knew she was going to catch it," Russell County coach Matt Hendricks said of his center fielder.
The Warriors got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, when Argue reached on a two-base error, stole third with one out and scored on Ashley Taylor's sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Jessica Folds and Karlee Jennings walked and moved to second and third on a wild pitch with one out. Weed singled, driving in Folds. Argue's sacrifice fly scored Jennings for a 3-0 lead.
