GHSA Class A baseball state playoffs: Brookstone gets swept out of second round at Charlton County

May 10, 2012

FOLKSTON, Ga. -- The Brookstone Cougars were shut out for the second straight game, falling to Charlton County 1-0 on Thursday afternoon in the second round of the Georgia High School Association Class A state baseball playoffs.

Charlton County, which won 6-0 in Game 1 Wednesday, will host Schley County or travel to Seminole County for the quarterfinals.

The Cougars got three hits in Thursday's loss -- Tim Kennedy, Drew Lingo and Mark McVay had one -- after being limited to just four Wednesday.

Kennedy got a one-out single in the first, but pitcher Scott Beasley got Drew Lingo to line out and Austin Pair to ground out to end the inning.

McVay doubled to lead off the third, but Max Williams, Matt Jones and Kennedy were retired in order.

The Cougars' best scoring chance came in the fourth. Lingo led off with a single, stole second and went to third on a flyout. But Duncan Fletcher's line drive was caught by the first baseman for the final out.

Eli Ussery was the tough-luck loser. He gave up just the one run on three hits.

LJ Talley drew a one-out walk in the top of the first. After another out, Chris Smith, the pitcher who shut out Brookstone on Wednesday, hit a double, which drove in Talley for a 1-0 lead.
