AHSAA Class 6A girls golf state tournament: Central-Phenix City's Alex Harrell in third place after first round

Published: May 15, 2012

OPELIKA, Ala. -- Central-Phenix City junior Alex Harrell is third after the first round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A state tournament at Grand National.

Harrell heads into today's final round on the Lake Course four shots behind the leader, Huntsville's Janie Jackson, who fired a 2-under 70.

Mountain Brook's Tatum Jackson is second after shooting a 1-over 73. Auburn's Megan Heath is fourth at 78.

Auburn is first on the team leaderboard with a 46-over 334. Mountain Brook is second at 339.

Harrell, who is graduating a year early to attend Auburn on a golf scholarship, is playing in the tournament as an individual after winning the South sub-state tournament at Moores Mill in Auburn last week with a 74. The Central team, however, did not qualify.

As a seventh-grader in 2008, Harrell was part of a Central team that won the state championship. Since then, she has finished second in 2009, third in 2010 and second again last year.

Harrell won the Ledger-Enquirer All-Bi-City Female Golfer of the Year award for each of the past three years.
