A Phenix City man who died Tuesday morning was found floating in the Chattahoochee River, authorities said.

Chester James, 56, was pronounced dead at 9:21 a.m. after bystanders spotted him about 400 yards south of the 13th Street Bridge, said Deputy Coroner Freeman Worley.

No foul play is suspected, Worley added.

“He’d been fishing and they found him face down in the water,” the coroner said.

Columbus has jurisdiction when someone is found in the Chattahoochee River. Phenix City has jurisdiction when the person is found on land on the Alabama side.
