Phenix City police charged a Central High School teacher last week on accusations he gave an inappropriate note to a 17-year-old student.
Christopher Matthews, 43, was arrested Friday at the Phenix City Police Department on a misdemeanor count of harassment. Matthews, who resigned the day of his arrest, is accused of passing a note to a female student some days earlier, authorities said.
Mr. Matthews wrote an inappropriate note to a student, Capt. Frank Ivey said. The contents of that note was basically expressing his feelings, his personal feelings.
Matthews, an art teacher for seven years, is accused of passing the note to the student sometime before graduation last Friday. On May 23 or 24, the girl told her parents about it. A parent then contacted a high school coach, and the matter reached a school resource officer, said Phenix City Schools superintendent Larry DiChiara.
That officer then took the complaint to police.
Theres been no allegation of sexual misconduct, DiChiara said. But once (police) take over, they dont give us any details.
We take any of these matters very seriously. Anytime we have any allegations like this, we immediately turn it over to law enforcement.
