Jane Eyre gets the Fifty Shades of Grey treatment

Published: June 14, 2012

I didn't get into the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy -- see Sonya Sorich's blog for her take on the popular erotic novels -- but I'm kind of a fan of the classics, like Jane Eyre.

Jane Eyre, retold as an erotic novel? We'll see.

From the Telegraph:

Jane Eyre Laid Bare has been billed by author Eve Sinclair as “an erotic version of my favourite classic”.

The book will chart the “smouldering sexual chemistry” between put-upon heroine Jane and Mr Rochester, a brooding man many years her senior.

The rewrite will be initially released as an e-book, with a mass-market paperback to follow “shortly afterwards”, according to The Bookseller magazine.

I'm not averse to modern adaptations or literary mash-ups. Zombies in my Jane Austen? Hilarious. I can also see why an author might pick Jane Eyre for a Fifty Shades of Grey style retelling. (Spoiler alert: Rochester keeps his first wife locked in an attic. You take it from there).

But...do I really want to read that? I may have to, just to satisfy my curiosity, even though I'm rather fond of the original, having read it a couple times in high school and college. I just hope this doesn't lead to a series of classics rewritten as erotic novels.

What do you think? Would you read it?
