Columbus police arrested one man and cited another early Monday after they found a Pit Bull with a gunshot wound to its face, authorities said.

Anthony Rogers, 22, is held without bond in the Muscogee County Jail on animal cruelty charges. Freddie Murry, 68, was given a court summons on similar charges and was not arrested, police said.

Their charges stem from a report of gunshots on Lafayette Drive about 12:40 a.m. Monday, Sgt. Art Sheldon said.

Officers responded to Rogers and Murry’s home and saw three Pit Bulls in the yard.

“All three Pit Bulls appeared to live in a cage,” Sheldon said. “The officer didn’t see any food or water, and they didn’t appear to have any shelter.”

Officers were told that one of the dogs bit Rogers, and he fired a gun in the air. However, Rogers told police the shot didn’t hit any of the dogs, Sheldon said.

In their report, officers state one dog had a head wound from a 20-gauge Mossberg shotgun. Sheldon said the wound was around the dog’s muzzle.

Animal control responded to the scene and took all three dogs from the scene, Sheldon said. Their conditions are unknown.

Officers charged Rogers with three counts of animal cruelty and one count each of aggravated animal cruelty, reckless conduct and a gun violation, jail officials said.

Murry was cited on three counts of animal cruelty, Sheldon said.
