Russell County's Grier makes first cut for USA Baseball national team

Russell County High rising senior Anfernee Grier was named to the 40-man roster for the USA Baseball 18-under National Team Trials.

The trials will be held at the USA Baseball National Training Complex at Cary, N.C.

The players were selected following the 2012 Tournament of Stars, which was held last week at the training complex.

The 40 players will train through Saturday as well as play two games in the Prospect Classic.

The roster will be cut to 28 players on Sunday. That 28-player team will play the final two games in the Prospect Classic on July 2-3.

After a six-week break, the 28 players will head to California for the second phase of the trials, which will take place Aug. 18-27.

Once the trials are complete, the roster will be cut again to 20 players. Those 20 will make up the 2012 USA Baseball 18-and-under National Team.

That team will compete in the IBAF Junior AAA 1-and-under Woirld Championships in Seoul, South Korea, which begin on Aug. 30.

Scott Brosius, the 1998 World Series MVP, will be the manager of the team.

Grier hit .380 (65-171) this past season for Russell County, which advanced to the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A quarterfinals. He hit 12 homers, 12 doubles, three triples and drove in 45 runs.

Grier and the Warriors played at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in the first National High School Invitational in late March. Grier went 5-for-12 with three runs scored in three games.
