Steve Martin in "The Big Year"

Published: July 7, 2012

For some reason, my father despised Steve Martin. My sister Dorothy and I really liked him and his song, "King Tut," would just have us in hysterics.

Daddy would leave the room.

He refused to watch him on television and we could not convince him to see him in any movie.

I'm kind of the same way with Cybill Sheppard. I never saw a single episode of "Moonlighting." And if she's in any movie, I won't go to see it. The same with anything on TV.

Madonna, the same thing.

Right now, I'm watching "The Big Year." It's about birders, people who go all over the world, to see who sees or hears the largest number of birds, starring Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson.

It's pretty good.

Daddy would have hated it, just because Martin is in the movie. Or maybe not. He would be 82-years-old and maybe he would have softened on Martin now.

I think he would like Martin's band, the Steep Canyon Rangers, because he liked bluegrass music. He absolutely adored the Just Us Band, the local band headed by Terry and Michelle Justice.

But probably not. He'd still dislike Martin. I guess I'm kind of like Daddy. I'm almost 60 and still loathe Madonna and Sheppard.
