The official launch of 4G LTE service in Columbus by Verizon Wireless is today.

The company has been preparing for the new service for some time, with tests in the market allowing existing smartphone customers to sample the greater speed.

But it should be available through most of Columbus, Phenix City and in the Smiths Station, Ala., area as of Thursday, the company said Tuesday.

The local rollout coincides with the launch of 4G LTE in 32 other markets. That will put the service in 337 markets nationwide, it said.

Verizon said 4G LTE should be up to 10 times faster than 3G. Customers who venture into areas where 4G is not available will step down to 3G.
