SUV crash causes traffic jam

Eastbound traffic on U.S. 80 in Phenix City came to grinding halt Saturday after an SUV went out of control and crashed just west of the Summerville Road exit.

The accident, which occurred shortly after 10 a.m., left traffic idled between Summerville Road and U.S. 431 North.

Phenix City and Columbus police, including a drug-sniffing dog, were on the scene just west of Summerville investigating the crash. Neither Columbus nor Phenix City officials returned calls seeking comment on the accident or when the road would be opened. The road was still closed more than two hours later.

The wreck also slowed westbound traffic and jammed intersections along U.S. 431 with overflowing vehicles.

A row of horse trailers with animals inside was among those caught in the traffic jam.

The operators of the trailers were outside trying to keep the horses under control.
