Columbus authorities recovered the body of a swimmer this morning after he went under the waters of the Chattahoochee River Sunday night.
Jarvis Willis, 23, of Russell County went under while swimming with two others about 9 p.m., authorities said.
He was down at the river fishing, said Muscogee County Coroner Bill Thrower. He went swimming in the river with another man. He made it across the river, but he didnt make it back.
The man Willis was swimming with turned back to help his friend, Thrower said. He grabbed Willis, but his grip didnt hold and Willis disappeared under the water.
Authorities responded to the area of Bay Avenue and 10th Street, as well as the Dillingham Street Bridge. The swimmers body was found about 12:30 a.m. today, Columbus Police Lt. Warren Dunlap said. Thrower pronounced Willis dead at 12:54 a.m. today.
The rivers extremely dangerous, the lieutenant added. It has currents in certain spots. Its hard to get out of it.
Sundays apparent drowning is the fourth this month.
Krystal Brown, 30, and her son Mister Brown, 11 months, died Aug. 13 after she went into the river for her 3-year-old son, David Brown. The 3 year old was rescued and flown to Atlanta, where he died days later, authorities said.
