BESSEMER, Ala. -- In a rematch of the 2011 Alabama Independent School Association state title game, Glenwood got a measure of revenge by defeating defending state champion Bessemer 17-14 Friday night in the season and region opener for both teams.
The winning margin was a field goal by senior Jake Wilson, who hit a 21-yarder in the fourth quarter after a 61-yard drive stalled. That made up for the field goal try in the first quarter that was partially blocked by the Rebels in a scoreless first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Gators took a 7-0 lead on the arm of Brandon Daley, who threw an 88-yard scoring strike to new receiver Michael Swann. The play came after a Rebel punt had pinned the Glenwood offense on their 12. Wilson's PAT made it 7-0.
However, a fumbled handoff from Daley to fullback Luke Dougherty set up the Rebels. Quarterback Noah Napier threw a 13-yard pass to Jaylon Winston to close the gap at 7-6. Napier's extra point was no good, and the score was 7-6 at halftime.
The Gators widened their lead to 14-6 when Dougherty capped a scoring drive with a 1-yard plunge midway through the third quarter and Wilson connected on his second extra point.
But, following the kickoff, Chris Edwards capped the drive with a 5-yard run and Napier passed for a two-point conversion to Rodriquez Mckinney to tie the score at 14-14 with 5:18 remaining in the third quarter.
That set the stage for the fourth quarter with Wilson's winning kick from 21 yards out.
The Gators stand at 1-0 on the young season and 1-0 in region play.
The leading rusher for Glenwood was Dylan Denney with 84 yards while Daley passed for 138 yards with one TD and one interception. Dougherty had 35 more rushing yards and a TD. The Rebels' Napier passed for 83 yards and ran for another 38 more while Edwards was their leading carrier with 63 yards and a TD.
