BREAKING DOWN THE HAWKS

The Good: The team is young but has had a strong offseason, according to coach Jeff Battles. It is led by the do-it-all Ronald Rosser, who was named to this season's Dandy Dozen. He, along with several other Hawks, has been looked at by college scouts.

The Bad: The Hawks gave up nearly 40 points per game last season, so the defense must play much better if they are to improve upon last year's one win. Gone is quarterback Joseph Gibson, who threw for almost a 1,000 yards. He transferred after last year.

Our take: The only direction to go is up, and it certainly appears that's where the Hawks are headed. The team has nine returning starters on offense and defense, and the offensive and defensive lines are loaded with upperclassmen. If sophomore quarterback Blake Berry can command the offense, the team should be improved in 2012, but a stretch of four straight road games will test the team.
