Paint a bowl, learn about your family ties

I got a bunch of emails all at once about some events that need a little more information than we can give them in the calendar.

Empty Bowl event

From 4-7 p.m. tonight at the Psalmond Road Recreation Center, 6550 Psalmond Road, you can paint a bowl to be used for the spring Empty Bowl fundraising event.

The center's director, Gary Freeman said the bowls are already made and dried. You just paint it any way you want. They'll fire it and have it ready for the Empty Bowl event next spring.

"You can express your inner artist," he said.

Doesn't that sound like a lot of fun?

Learn about your roots

Ever wonder about your family tree?

I have details about my mother's side of the family but the documents are in Japanese. I really need to sit down with my mother and have her translate.

The information dates back to the 1500s, in the Akita prefecture. Apparently, my ancestors managed a gold mine or something like that.

My father's side of the family is a mystery, though.

Those of you who really are interested in genealogy can go to the next meeting of the Muscogee Genealogical Society. The group meets at 2 p.m. Sept. 15 at Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center, 3535 S. Lumpkin Road.

This particular meeting features Columbus State University biology professor Brian Schwartz talking about "DNA Testing for Genealogy -- The Latest Trends.

It's free and includes light refreshments.

LaGrange Symphony Lunch

If you want to see what the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra is doing this season, make a reservation for the orchestra's My Favorite Things Luncheon. It begins with table viewing at 11 a.m. and lunch at noon on Sept. 17 in the Highland Country Club, 1001 Country Club Drive, in LaGrange.

There's going to be a preview of the 2012-13 season, presented by conductor and music director Patricio Cobos. Cobos, a violinist, will also perform.

Those attending the luncheon who are season ticket holders and members of the guild are eligible for a drawing. The prize is a three-day stay in a condo on the Links Gold Golf Course in Destin, Fla. The winner must be present to win.

Tickets for the luncheon are $25 and must be reserved by 5 p.m. Sept. 12.
