Having a ball trolling on the river

Published: September 2, 2012

There's a lesson to be learned from this, and it is Monday Mail.

Ball

Today's opening is from the 1966 pop song "Red Rubber Ball," written by Paul Simon and Bruce Woodley. It was a big hit for The Cyrkle back when I was a kid.

Trollin'

Today we begin with a posting to a piece last week about Mayor Teresa Tomlinson's telling folks at a local leadership forum that online trolls' comments on our news stories give outsiders a bad impression of Columbus, if you can imagine.

Apparently she doesn't see pseudonymous snipers as a source of entertainment. Or as a tourism slogan ("Columbus: We're Trolling on The River!")

To that report on Tomlinson's remarks, online commenter "ItsBummerStoopid" posted this:

This is the same thing little Timmy Chitwood has complained about, Too many people jerking his chain. It's all in good fun, Mighty Mayor. Just try to grow some thicker skin and laugh at yourself a bit. You are funny, you know?

Dear Bummer:

She is going to be so ticked that you compared me to her. Maybe you should go hide behind a different pseudonym before she hunts you down.

Last dance

Here is a hard-copy letter from the Historic Columbus Foundation.

Dear Historic Columbus Members,

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are extremely grateful for your continued support as a member of Historic Columbus. This letter is to make you aware, as a valued member, of a recent decision by the Board….

On Tuesday, Aug. 14, the Historic Columbus Board of Directors continued its evaluation of the fundraiser, Heritage Ball. At the end of the discussion, the Board voted to refocus the Ball on the mission and projects of Historic Columbus. The Board celebrates its strong relationship with the Cotillion Club and will assist with the transition of the debutante presentation to another interested sponsoring organization that might come forward. The name "Heritage Ball" will also remain the property of Historic Columbus.

Continuing to recognize and honor the significant contributions of Historic Columbus' past Honored Ladies, as well as future honorees, is a priority for the Board and the HCF Development Committee. Their annual recognition will be an immediate focus for the Committee….

We greatly appreciate your commitment to improving quality of life in our community through your membership in Historic Columbus….

Dear HCF:

But I never got to escort a debutante. I thought that was like a member benefit or something.
