Yikes! I'm 60 today!

Published: September 3, 2012

When people say I don't look my age, I simply smile and thank them.

But what does 60 look like these days?

Yes, I'm celebrating No. 60 today.

It's also the Year of the Dragon, on the Asian calendar.

I have not yet won the lottery, but I still have until what, next February or something?

Some of my friends freaked out just before turning 30. Or 40, or 50.

Those milestone birthdays were no big deal. Just another number, though my friends made sure that my 50th birthday was memorable. Actually, that celebration lasted a month. I can't remember how many parties they threw for me.

This year is much quieter. My colleagues at work took me to lunch Friday.

I'm guessing 60 is when I'll be reflecting on things I haven't done yet.

But that just makes my head hurt. So I probably won't be dwelling on that long. I mean, what can I do?

Nope. Maybe I'll think about what I'll do in the future.

A few years ago, my brother wanted to vacation in Las Vegas with his sisters. So we spent a great week there.

Sometime in the next year or so, he wants to do another sibling vacation, gong to the Grand Canyon.

I'll be up for that. We lived in Arizona for almost nine years and didn't go to the Grand Canyon. Might be something to do in my 60s.

I'm grateful that I can still work. My editor, Dawn, is not only very nice, she is a skilled editor with a great sense of journalism. My Features colleagues are great. Katie is one of the sweetest girls around and a talented writer. Sonya is our social media guru and doesn't laugh at any of stupid questions. Well, not to my face, anyway! She, too, is a good writer. I miss havng Sara at the desk next to me, though she's still in the newsroom, thank goodness. The four of us made one of the best Features team in the 37 years I've worked here.

I love the arts, so it's a good thing that's my job. I've met and become great friends with many of the folks in the arts. Yes, sometimes they drive me crazy because they're creative people and kind of forget that I have deadlines. But for the most part, I think I'm able to cover the arts in Columbus.

Now, I'm at the age where people, many of them strangers, come up to me and ask when I'm going to retire. Can you believe that?

Is that any of their business?

Like many of you, I can't afford to retire just yet. Maybe in a few years, I'll have to consider that.

Until then, you're stuck with me.
