Published: September 6, 2012

A Fort Benning soldier in basic training died Thursday at St. Francis Hospital, two days after losing consciousness Tuesday during a physical fitness test, a public affairs spokeswoman said.

The name of the soldier wasn't released, pending the notification of his family, said Monica Manganaro, a public affairs spokeswoman.

While on a two-mile run, the soldier collapsed. Military personnel in the area immediately  began assisting the stricken soldier who was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Columbus where he never regained consciousness.

Manganaro said the death remains under investigation. No further details were available late Thursday.

The death comes a week after a soldier was hit in the neck by shrapnel and suffered a minor wound during training on a firing range.
