A Fort Benning soldier who died Thursday at St. Francis Hospital has been identified as Spc. Anthony Walter McGill of Walnut, Calif.
McGill, 26, was assigned to the 192nd Infantry Brigade, the post public affairs office said today.
Authorities said the soldier in basic training collapsed while on a two-mile run during a physical fitness test Tuesday. He was immediately assisted by military personnel and taken to the hospital where he never regained consciousness.
Monica Manganaro, a public affairs spokeswoman at the post, said the death remains under investigation.
The death comes more than a week after a soldier was hit by shrapnel and suffered a minor wound to the neck on a firing range.
