Columbus Councilor seeks congressional help to prevent closing of locks

Published: September 11, 2012

More than three weeks before the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closes locks to recreational boaters downstream, Columbus Councilor C.E. “Red” McDaniel is seeking action from the congressional delegation to prevent the closing by the Corps.

McDaniel, who has supported plans for a marina on the Chattahoochee River, won approval of a resolution today from the 10-member council during its bi-monthly meeting.

All boats and barges are now able to bypass the dams at Lakes Walter F. George or Lake Eufaula, Andrews and Seminole. By Oct. 7, traffic will be closed to recreational boaters and open by appointment only only to commercial barges.
