AUBURN, Ala. -- Once No. 3 Auburn High got the ball Friday night at Duck Samford Stadium, it didn't take long for the Tigers to score and they never let up en route to a 48-7 win over Smiths Station in a Class 6A Region 3 contest.

Auburn (3-0, 2-0) scored on all five of its possessions in the first half and held a 34-7 halftime lead despite possessing the ball for only 8:26 of the 24 minutes in the opening two quarters. Gevon Jones got things started with a 9-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter and following a Smiths Station punt, quarterback Cameron Echols Luper -- hooked up with Blaise Taylor for a 53-yard touchdown pass to put the Tigers up 13-0 with 4:41 still to go in the opening period.

After a short punt by the Panthers (1-2, 1-1), Auburn took two plays to score its next touchdown, this one on a 17-yard run by Luper.

Armed with a 20-0 lead, Auburn let off the gas just a little, allowing the Panthers to put together a 10-play, 80-yard drive that was capped off by an 8-yard touchdown run by J.J. Dancy. Harrison Jones made the extra point to get Smiths Station within 20-7 with 10:02 to go before halftime.

However, the Tigers scored twice more before the break, on a 1-yard run by Reuben Foster and a 25-yard pass from Luper to Maltiece O'Neal-El, to lead 34-7 going into the locker room.

Luper led Auburn's balanced attack with 72 rushing yards on seven carries and a touchdown and he completed 2-of-3 passes for another 78 yards and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Smiths Station -- which made just one of its six third-down conversions in the first half -- only had 122 total yards and Dancy managed just 19 yards on his 13 carries in the opening 24 minutes.

Auburn has now beaten Smiths Station seven straight times, with the last Panthers win in the series coming back in 2004.Friday at Duck Samford StadiumSmiths Station 0 7 0 0--7
