LaGrange 31, Shaw 14: Raiders fall at Grangers' homecoming

LAGRANGE, Ga. -- Benny Gray ran for 177 yards and Zach Giddens threw two touchdown passes to lead LaGrange to a 31-14 Homecoming win over Shaw. The game was the Region 5-AAAA opener for both teams.

Chandler Whittlesey accounted for both Shaw touchdowns. He scored from the 1 for the first touchdown of the game and closed out the scoring with a 6-yard pass to Steven Jefferey. Whittlesey was 25-of-38 passing for 190 yards. The LaGrange defense sacked him four times in the game, including once for a safety for the Grangers' first points of the night.

Jefferey was Whittlesey's favorite target. He pulled in 12 passes for 110 yards and the touchdown.

The two teams were flagged for penalties 13 times each in the game. The Raiders had 129 yards in penalties and LaGrange 107.

Shaw took the opening kickoff and drove to the LaGrange 43 before Whittlesey lost the ball to end the drive. The Grangers drove to the Raiders' 4-yard line but missed a field goal.

The Raiders put together a long scoring drive of 80 yards to take a 7-0 lead. The drive took the final six minutes of the first quarter, finishing on the third play of the second quarter.

The drive almost ended when Whittlesey fumbled, but Jacorrey Crowell recovered for the Raiders. A 9-yard completion to Jefferey gave the Raiders a first and goal. Whittlesey sneaked the ball in from the 1 on fourth down. Hunter Eaton's extra point made it 7-0.

The game turned in the final 86 seconds of the first half. An intentional grounding penalty backed the Raiders up at their own 6. Dazmon Dunlap came untouched to sack Whittlesey in the end zone for a safety.

After the kickoff, the Grangers drove 45 yards in just five plays to take a 10-7 lead. Demonton Boyd finished the short drive from 3-yards out. Giddens then passed to

Gray for the two-point conversion.

LaGrange carried the momentum into the second half. The Grangers scored on all three of their possessions to build a 31-7 lead. They had 229 of their 412 total yards in the third quarter.

Giddens opened the third quarter with a 17-yard pass to Corey Perkins to finish an 8-play 59-yard drive. On the Grangers' next possession, Gray burst 52 yards on the first play to make it 24-7. Giddens finished the scoring blitz with a 16-yard pass to Tavone Rivers to cap a 77-yard drive.

The Raiders put together a 12-play, 77-yard drive in the fourth quarter. The Raiders converted twice on third down to keep the drive going. Whittlesey threw the final 6 yards to Jefferey with under six minutes left for the 31-14 final.
