Harris County 37, Douglas County 31: Tigers rally to win in double overtime

Special to the Ledger-EnquirerSeptember 28, 2012

HAMILTON, Ga. -- It took two overtimes, but Harris County picked up its first victory of the season Friday night 37-31 over Douglas County.

The winning play was a defensive stop on the first Douglas County offensive play of the second overtime period when Hunter Paddock recovered an Ellis Richardson fumble. Harris County's Esaias Chapman had scored on a 4 yard run to cap the Tigers' offensive possession of the second overtime and give Harris County a 37-31 lead.

Harris County entered the fourth quarter trailing 28-13 but scored on its first possession of the period with a 60-yard two play drive. Chapman rushed for 32 yards on the first play and Justin Wright hit A. J. Howard on a 28-yard pass for the score to pull to within 28-20.

The Tigers regained possession with 5:17 remaining in the game trailing by eight and drove 80-yards in nine plays.

On fourth-and-4 from the Douglas County 18-yard line Harris County used defense tackle Jay Ellison as a running back. Nearing the first down Ellison attempted to dive over the pile. He landed on his feet and he and the offensive line carried the Douglas County defense the final 15 yards for the score. Ellison was again used as the runner on the two point conversion and tied the game at 28-28 with his run up the middle.

Douglas County drove to the Harris County 24-yard line where Ellis Richardson hit Anthony Garner on a middle screen. Garner took the ball to the 11-yard line but was stripped by Marvin James and TaQuon Marshall to send the game into overtime.

The teams swapped field goals in the first overtime period.

Harris County opened the game with a 13-play-80 yard scoring drive and went up 7-0 on Justin Wright's 1-yard sneak.

On Douglas County's first possession Tyeler Denova tipped a Richardson pass and Jaborie Partridge intercepted the ball setting the Tigers up at the Douglas 44-yard line. Four plays later Chapman scored from the 4-yard line for a 13-0.

Douglas County scored 28 unanswered points in the second and third periods.Friday at Harris CountyDouglas Co. 0 14 14 0 3 0--31
