Roofer dies after 20-foot drop to warehouse floor

Published: October 3, 2012

A 34-year-old Columbus roofer died Wednesday after falling through the roof of a warehouse building at 4801 Cargo Drive, authorities said.

Gary Vielweber, an employee of Allstate Roofing Company, was pronounced dead at The Medical Center an hour after falling more than 20 feet to the concrete floor of the warehouse, said Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Freeman Worley.

A cause of death hasn't been determined, but Worley said it's possible the man sustained a ruptured aorta during the fall.

An autopsy will be performed today at the crime lab in Atlanta, he said.

"It hurt him pretty bad," Worley said. "He fell through the roof on to the concrete."

Vielweber may have been working on the roof before the accident, the deputy coroner said.

In a report on the accident, Columbus police said Vielweber was working at the building but didn't specify how the accident occurred.

Police were called to the hospital after the victim died.

Worley said an investigation into the death will be conducted by the coroner's office and the police department.
