LaGrange's Zach Giddens threw for four touchdowns in the first half and led the Grangers to a 41-7 conquest of Columbus High on Thursday night at Kinnett Stadium in a Region 5-AAAA game.
Giddens had 183 yards and all of his passing before halftime as the Grangers improved their overall record to 3-2 and 2-0 in region play while the Blue Devils fell to 0-5 and 0-2 in the region. For the game he was 8-of-10 passing before sitting out the entire second half.
In fact, the only two passes that were not completed were picked off by the Blue Devils' Ivan Rome.
The LaGrange quarterback wasted no time in getting the Grangers off on the right foot when he threw to Dee Smith on the second offensive play of the game for a 55-yard touchdown as LaGrange went on to take a 21-0 first-quarter lead.
Smith, playing both offense and defense for the Grangers, then intercepted an errant Blue Devil pass, setting up a second LaGrange touchdown.
After Giddens set up a first-and-goal with a 43-yard toss to Qua Baldwin, Demonton Boyd scored from the 1 to make it 14-0.
The Blue Devils outscored the Grangers in the second half, which was played with a running clock due to the score.
Senior Tony Alexander took a pass from backup quarterback Brandon Mapel and went 55 yards to set up a first-and-goal.
Two plays later, Dale Alexander scored to break the shutout and get Columbus on the board. Mapel passed for 79 yards total, all in the second half.
Columbus was held to minus 50 yards in the first half and had negative yards rushing for the game.
