Granny charged after girl, 10, was hurled from van while backing up

Published: October 6, 2012

The grandmother of 10-year-old girl was charged with reckless conduct Friday after the child was allowed to back up her vehicle, strike a tree at her Higgs Drive home and hurl her from the driver’s seat, Columbus police said.

“I was my fault,” Peggy Puanani Kluge said today.

Kluge, 56,  said Imanni Ragland was treated at The Medical Center for scrapes on her hand, back and leg after the 4:29 p.m. accident at her home. She was later released.

In a report, police said Kluge told them she asked the girl to get in her 1994 Astro van and back it away from poles preventing the vehicle doors from opening. She entered the vehicle, then struck a tree and ran into the roadway before the girl was hurled from the van.

Kluge said police didn’t state much to her about the reckless conduct charge. “I was there,” the grandmother said. “She got into the car.”

Kluge was ordered to appear in Columbus Recorder’s Court for a 2 p.m. hearing on Oct. 26.
