Harris County 21, Bainbridge 17: Tigers hold on to win second straight game

Special to the Ledger-EnquirerOctober 12, 2012

It took a last-second scare for Harris County, but it picked up its second win of the season Friday night 21-17 over Bainbridge.

After starting the season 0-4 the Tigers have won two straight, and Friday's game was its first region game of the season.

"These guys have never given up," Harris County coach Tommy Parks said. "We started 0-4. We may have had people on the outside of this program giving up but these 82 kids never gave up."

Leading 21-17, DiQuan Roberts halted a Bearcat comeback attempt when he picked off a Preston Norris pass with 2:13 remaining in the game.

The Tigers were able to pick up a first down to run off some clock and went into the victory formation. In the shotgun formation, the Tigers lost 6 yards per play, which backed them up to their 5 yard line. With seven seconds remaining and facing fourth-and-37, Justin Wright was to take the snap and run around the end zone until he ran out the clock or took a safety. With two seconds remaining Wright left the end zone and was pushed out of bounds at the 5-yard line as time expired.

The Tigers trailed 17-7 after the Bearcats opened the second half with a three play 71-yard drive and scored on Michael Stubbs 62-yard run.

Harris County answered with a 12 play 74-yard drive of its own and scored when Wright hit Brandon Culverson on a tunnel screen that Culverson turned into a 41-yard score and a 17-14 score.

The Tigers had to punt with 5:32 remaining in the game still trailing until the punt return team forced a Bearcat fumble that was recovered by Monterio Wyat.

Esaias Chapman scored on a 20-yard run to give the Tigers its first lead of the game with 4:24 "The two games we've won we've come from behind in the second half," Parks said. "That just goes to show that these guys fight until the last buzzer."
