Tuscaloosa Academy 44, Glenwood 23: Knights clinch Region 1 Class AAA title, run past Gators

Special to the Ledger-EnquirerOctober 12, 2012

Tuscaloosa Academy became the Region 1, Class AAA champion and the top area seed for the state playoffs, defeating Glenwood 44-23 Friday night at Sammy Howard Field.

Tuscaloosa's defense forced three turnovers. The Knights were paced offensively by three rushing touchdowns from big fullback Jaevon Walton, who finished the game with 136 yards on 15 carries. Adding to the balanced attack was quarterback Johnathon Plott, who passed for three touchdowns in the first half.

The Knights got on the scoreboard first. Walton's first touchdown and a two-point conversion by Austin Menard gave Tuscaloosa an 8-0 lead in the first quarter. The game got away from the Gators in the second quarter when they gave up three touchdowns in 1 minute and saw an 8-0 game become, 30-0 blowout.

Plott passed to Parker Farley and Menard passed for a second 2-point conversion to make it 16-0. Glenwood was flagged on the play and the Knights were kicking off from the 45, so they ran an onside kick play and recovered the ball. Three plays later, Walton scored his second touchdown on a 13-yard run.

Again Glenwood was flagged and another kickoff from the 45 saw another onside kick again captured by the Knights. One play, a 33-yard pass from Plott to Pride Snow and it was 30-0.

Brandon Daley finally got Glenwood on the scoreboard when he hit his top target, Michael Swann, with an 11-yard scoring pass and Luke Dougherty ran for a 2-pointer.

But the Knights got a third touchdown run from Walton and a scoring pass from Plott and it was 44-8 at the half.

The Gators did outscore Tuscaloosa 15-0 in the second half, but the Knights had cleared the bench.

Daley was one bright spot for Glenwood, passing for 201 yards.

He also set up Dougherty's 2-yard run with a 44-yard pass to Swann in the third period. Swann finished with six catches for 98 yards and a score.

The Gators got a safety by Logan Kiker and a scoting run by freshman Undriel Copeland in the final period to finish the scoring.

The win gave Tuscaloosa Academy an 8-0 mark and overall and 6-0 in the region. Glenwood is now 5-3 and 4-2 and has completed region play.

Next week, the Gators play host to Hooper Academy, another playoff bound team from the AISA region 2.
