"Circle Mirror Transformation" is set at a local community acting class in Shirley, Vermont. The class is taught by local artist Marty and attended by James, her husband, Schultz, a recently divorced carpenter, Theresa, a flirty, former New York actress and Lauren, a pouty 16-year-old.
Most of the action of the play takes place in common acting exercises (the title referring to one), and over the course of the six week class the character's personal lives seep into the class, creating poignant drama that animates their ordinary lives. By the end of the play, each character undergoes an evolution of self, as the relationships they've formed with other characters develop or shatter. Circle Mirror Transformation is both sharply funny and touching, while celebrating the subtle power of creativity.
