Pacelli splits with Pace Academy; Game 3 today

Berth in next week's Elite 8 at South Commons at stake today

Pacelli won Game 1 Wednesday in a GHSA first-round series, defeating Pace Academy 4-3 in eight innings, but fell 4-2 in Game 2 to set up a deciding game at 4:30 p.m. today at Pacelli.

Pacelli took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning in the first contest with a one-out walk by Savannah Claridy followed by a single from Lauren Rudeshiem and a bunt single from Rita de Rojas that loaded the bases.

Taylor Cooper grounded to the Pace third baseman who threw low to first allowing Claridy to score. After another out, Jennifer Hester singled to right field driving in Rudeshiem and de Rojas.

The Knights tied the game with two runs in the top of the sixth and one in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.

With an international rule runner placed on second base to start the eight inning, Pace was able to advance Sydney Willis to third but could not score.

Pinch-runner Catlyn Santiago was the Vikings' international rule runner with Erica Trudell batting. Trudell bunted to first basemen Maryellen Malone. Malone's throw was wide of first, allowing Santiago to score from second for the walk-off win.

Pace scored in the bottom of the second inning in Game 2 when Nora Harlin reached on a one-out bunt. Meagan Talley's throw was wide of first, allowing Harlin to reach and advance to second. The ball got past right-fielder Reese Williamson and Harlin scored.

In the top of the fifth, Pacelli took a 2-1 lead with Makala Herrara walking to lead off the inning, Williamson was hit by a pitch with one out and Trudell singled to drive in Herrara. Williamson stole third and came home on an errant throw by Lindsey Zwecker.

Amber Easley led off the sixth for Pace with a triple, Zwecker reached on an error, which allowed Easley to score. With two outs Malone doubled driving in Zwecker. Sarah Werner singled to drive in Malone for a 4-2 lead.

Pacelli got the tying runs on base in the top of the seventh but could not score.

Rudeshiem was 4 for 7 in the two games with a double. She also pitched both games for Pacelli.

The winner of today's game will advance to the Elite 8 at South Commons, which begins Oct. 25.
