Spencer wins state volleyball opener over Dublin

Published: October 17, 2012

The Spencer volleyball team earned a three-game sweep in its first-round matchup against Dublin on Wednesday in Columbus.

The win, which came 25-7, 25-14, 25-7, came in the school's first home playoff match, and it is the first time Spencer has advanced to the second round in school history.

The Lady Greenwave (12-7) were led by Corrina Johnson, who notched 10 consecutive aces, and Alexus Griffin, who had eight straight aces and one block. Tatyana Griffin also added nine kills in the match.

Spencer coach Lamont Sheffield said the team made some simple mistakes in the second game, but re-focused in the third to pick up the win.

Spencer will face the winner of No. 1-seed Wesleyan and No. 4 Coosa in the second round. If it is Wesleyan, the Lady Greenwave will play on the road; if it is Coosa, they will host.
