Brookstone swept out of state softball tournament

October 18, 2012

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -- Brookstone got off to fast starts in both games against Mount Pisgah Christian on Wednesday, but couldn't make it last in either one.

Mt. Pisgah swept Brookstone 11-4, 5-2 in the opening round of the GHSA Class A state tournament.

The Lady Cougars, who finished their season at 18-13, scored four runs in the top of the first in Game 1, but the Patriots bounced back with five runs in the second and three in the fourth to take control.

In Game 2, Brookstone scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to tie the Patriots. But just as they did in Game 1, Brookstone would not score in the final six innings.

In the first game, Brookstone loaded the bases for Jessica Lewis, who singled in a run. Graysen Sanders followed with a double to drive in three runs.

But the Lady Cougars managed just two hits, both by Sydney Weaver, the rest of the way against Courtney Condon.

The Patriots, who advance to the Elite 8 that will get under way Oct. 25 at South Commons, pounded out 15 hits off Weaver in the opener. Morgan Walters went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Only four of the 11 runs Weaver allowed were earned as the Lady Cougars made three errors.

In the nightcap, Isabel McCluskey doubled to lead off the bottom of the first. She scored on an error. Kali Spitzmiller singled in a run later in the inning.

Spitzmiller and Sanders had two hits apiece.

McCluskey took the loss in the second game, allowing five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits.Wednesday at Mt. Pisgah
