Harris County 48, Northside 0: Tigers shut down Patriots early, keep them down

October 19, 2012

HAMILTON, Ga. -- Harris County went 3-and-out on its first offensive possession Friday night against Northside but scored on four of its next five drives -- and added a defensive touchdown -- to take a 35-0 halftime lead on the way to a 48-0 victory.

On Northside's first possession it drove to the Tiger 3-yard line and appeared ready to take an early lead. Kendrick Smith was stopped for no gain on third down and Brady Pitts lost yardage on fourth down turning the ball over to the Tigers on downs.

"I thought the key to the game was that first drive of the game when we held them inside the 10 and they didn't get any points on the board," Harris County coach Tommy Parks said.

Harris County drove 90 yards in 5 plays and scored when Justin Wright found A. J. Howard on a 49-yard pass for a 7-0 lead.

The Tigers' next drive was 51 yards and took seven plays -- the final two on a "Rhino" run by defensive lineman Jay Ellison.

Harris County did not score on its first drive of the second quarter as a touchdown pass from Wright to DiQuan Roberts on a fake field goal was called back on a penalty.

Three plays after the Tigers had to punt Roberts picked up a Patriot fumble and returned it 48-yards for a score and a 21-0 lead.

Wright completed 3-of-4 passes on the Tigers' next drive, including a 9-yard touchdown to TaQuon Marshall for a 28-0 lead.

Northside tried its own fake field goal late in the second quarter which failed, giving the Tigers possession at the Patriot 47-yard line with 2:08 remaining in the half.

Wright found Marshall on a 29-yard pass and, two plays later, Roberts scored from 7 yards out for the 35-0 halftime margin.

Esaias Chapman led all rushers with 118 yards rushing on 16 carries, all in the first half.

Wright ended the night with 147 yards on 6-of-12 passing.

"Obviously in this type of offense you are going to have to throw it a little bit to be able to loosen the defense up to run it," Parks said. "We're going to try to throw it to run the football."
