— Freshman quarterback Jonathan Wallace will make his first career start Saturday against New Mexico State, head coach Gene Chizik announced Tuesday.

“He was up here all day yesterday watching film … not that that’s the first day he’s done that,” Chizik said. “Our team has a high level of respect for how he prepares and goes about his business, not just in the classroom but on the field.”

A Central-Phenix City product, Wallace has played in five games, exclusively running the Wildcat offense until this past Saturday in a 63-21 loss to Texas A&M at Jordan-Hare Stadium. He took his first snaps under center in relief of Clint Moseley and Kiehl Frazier. He went 6-for-9 with 122 passing yards and two touchdowns in the defeat. His passing efficiency rating in limited action is 247.72, more than double that of Moseley or Frazier.

Wallace will address the media at approximately 2:45 p.m. ET Tuesday.
