The joke is on sports fans in Columbus

Maybe Hurricane Sandy had something to do with it. Or maybe there just wasn't going to be a Dan Patrick Show on Monday for some other reason.

But after looking into it, it appears that Fox Sports Radio is no more for this area. Clear Channel, which owns WHAL-AM 1460, the home for Fox Sports for the past few years, decided to make a change.

If you turned to that station this week expecting to hear Dan Patrick or Jim Rome or any of the other sports talk, you were in for a rude awakening.

Sports talk has been replaced with a comedy format.

WHAL will continue to be the home of the Sam Mitchell show, which has some sports talk mixed with a variety of other topics.

And Georgia basketball games will still be heard on WHAL.

But if you want to hear Dan Patrick and/or Jim Rome, you will need to find another way.

Perhaps, sports talk fans in Columbus will get lucky and Davis Broadcasting will split its WEAM-AM 1580 and WIOL-FM 95.7 simulcast and use Fox Sports on one of the stations.

Currently, Davis has ESPN on both. Several years ago, before Bobby Z came to Columbus and started hosting an afternoon show, executives at Davis talked about splitting the stations and having separate programming.

That never happened, of course. But maybe with Fox Sports programming up for grabs, maybe it will now.
