Suspect charged in shooting, theft of vehicle

A suspect was arrested early Saturday after a Columbus man was shot in the chest and his vehicle stolen, police said.

Michael Thomas, 20, was arrested about 90 minutes after a 20-year-old man was shot in the chest at 3110 Plateau Drive, said Police Sgt. Matt Blackstock. Thomas is in the Muscogee County Jail for a an 8 a.m. hearing in Recorder’s Court. He will face charges of aggravated assault, possession of a gun during commission of a crime and armed robbery.

The victim was in stable condition in the intensive care unit at The Medical Center in Columbus.

Police said the victim was shot in the lower chest and his 2006 Chevrolet Malibu was stolen about 3:07 a.m. An investigation into the shooting led to Thomas as a suspect.
