CSU hires assistant volleyball coach

Columbus State volleyball coach Casey Cornett announced the hiring of Chris Akers as an assistant coach Thursday.

Akers is the director of the Columbus Juniors Volleyball Club. He was an assistant coach at Columbus High School before becoming the head coach at Calvary Christian, where he won a GISA state championship in 2010. The Knights also finished as state runners-up in 2009 and 2011.

Akers is the first member of the volleyball staff. CSU will begin play in the fall of 2013.

CSU's Evilsizer wins two awards

U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named Columbus State cross country coach J.D. Evilsizer the men's and women's Southeast Region Coach of the Year.

This is the second time Evilsizer has won the recognition for women's coach of the year. This is his first such honor for the men.

Both of Evilsizer's teams won the NCAA Southeast Regionals last week and will compete in the national tournament on Nov. 17.

CSU golf team moves up to No. 9

The Columbus State men's golf team finished the fall season at No. 9 in the latest Golf World/Nike Division II Coaches' Poll.

The Cougars were No. 19 in the previous poll.

CSU finished the fall season with a seventh-place finish at the McDonough Cup in Orlando, Fla. In its other four tournaments, CSU had three runner-up finishes and placed third in the other.
