Chile fires coach Borghi

Published: November 15, 2012

Chile manager Claudio Borghi was fired after a 3-1 loss to Serbia on Wednesday in an international friendly.

The 48-year-old Borghi replaced Marcelo Bielsa as manager last year, but Chile has dropped its last three 2014 World Cup qualifiers to slip to sixth place in the group.

Only the top five teams from South American qualifying advance to the event in Brazil. Chile is level on points with Venezuela and Uruguay, but trailing both on goal differential.

Just the top four earn an automatic berth, and the fifth-place squad will drop into a playoff.
