D.J. Brown nailed four clutch free throws at the end of overtime to lift the San Jose State Spartains to a 68-67 victory over the Weber State Wildcats at the San Diego State Event Center.
James Kinney paced San Jose State (1-2) with a game-high 24 points while Chris Cunningham added 10. Brown finished with only seven points but handed out five assists.
Davion Berry finished with 21 points for Weber State (1-1). Scott Bamforth had 11 points and Gelaun Wheelwright tacked on 10 off the bench. Joel Bolomboy brought down a game-high 11 rebounds.
San Jose State broke out to a 35-27 lead at halftime after shooting 46.4 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes including a 5-of-7 effort from beyond the arc.
Weber State clawed back in the second half despite connecting on only 39.3 percent of its field goal attempts. The difference was a 12-0 advantage for the Wildcats from 3-point range.
The game was tied 59-59 with a minute remaining in regulation. Weber State's Kyle Tesnak then nailed two free throws to put the Wildcats ahead. On tis next posession Cunningham knocked down a jumper that tied it up again and with neither team able to score before the buzzer, sent the game to overtime.
Weber State went up 67-64 with just over a minute to play in the extra period. However Brown got to the line on San Jose State's final two posessions and a final shot attempt by Berry missed to give the Spartans the hard-fought win.
