Toilet paper on Toomer's Oaks catches fire

Published: November 18, 2012

Toilet paper hanging from the Toomer's Oaks on the campus of Auburn University caught fire early this morning.

Auburn Police Captain Tom Stofer said the fire occurred around 3:20 a.m.

"We don't know if it was intentionally set or it was an accident. We are investigating," Stofer said.

Auburn fans cover the trees with toilet paper after a football victory.

Auburn beat Alabama A&M 51-7 on Saturday, the team's third victory of the season.

"I don't think the fire actually did much damage to the trees," Stofer said. "This type of thing has happened before.""

The trees were poisoned in Dec. 2010 with a toxic herbicide and are dying.

An Alabama football fan, Harvey Updyke Jr., has been charged with the crime. He has yet to come to trial.
