A man whose car crash left his 2005 Nissan up on its side at Sixth Avenue and Fourth Street dashed into the Booker T. Washington Apartments complex to escape police, officers reported.

In the car investigators found a .357 magnum handgun and an open bottle of Bud Light, leading police to charge Jackeith Buck with violating the open container law and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, they said.

The wreck happened about 3 a.m. Sunday after Buck tried to "drive recklessly in between two vehicles," police said.

After a sheriff's deputy caught Buck in the housing area, the suspect who smelled of alcohol told police he had consumed enough to be charged with driving under the influence, officers said.

Police said they also charged Buck with DUI, obstruction, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
