A home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner remains recession-friendly -- at least if you believe the American Farm Bureau Federation. This year, the average cost of a Thanksgiving feast for 10 is $49.48, according to the federation. That includes turkey, stuffing, cranberries, pumpkin pie and all the basic trimmings.

Either the number is a little low...or I need to be more budget-conscious while shopping for Thanksgiving essentials. In the past few years, I've had a hand in cooking Thanksgiving dinner twice. Both times, I definitely spent more than $49.48 -- to serve about five people.
