Someone hit a downtown nightclub patron so hard with a bottle he was knocked unconscious early Thursday, Columbus police reported.

The nightspot was so crowded that no one else saw what happened, officers said.

Two patrol officers reported they were working part-time downtown were flagged down at 1:20 a.m. outside Bootlegger's, 1039 Broadway, where 33-year-old Mike Terry lay unconscious with cuts on his lip and left ear.

Terry, who apparently had been struck on the left side of his face, was taken to The Medical Center for treatment.

"Due to a large crowd inside, no one saw who struck Mr. Terry," the officers wrote. "Mr. Terry was not able to answer any questions."

They said Bootlegger's management would check surveillance video to determine if the assault was recorded.
