Cleveland Melvin tallied 21 points and 10 rebounds as the DePaul Blue Demons were able to hold off the Auburn Tigers, 80-76, in the SEC/Big East Challenge at Auburn Arena.
Brandon Young added 19 points and five assists for the Blue Demons (4-3), while Worrel Clahar chipped in 11 points.
Auburn (2-5) lost despite getting a career-high 28 points from Frankie Sullivan. Rob Chubb recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Noel Johnson netted 10 points for the Tigers.
The first half ended with Auburn holding to a 46-42 lead. The Tigers shot 48.5 percent from the floor in the opening frame, with DePaul making 46.7 percent of its field goal attempts. The Blue Demons kept the game close by draining 6- of-10 from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes.
The Blue Demons took a 55-52 advantage six minutes into the second half on a Young three-pointer, and they were able to cling to the lead until the Tigers tied it up at 72-72 on a Johnson trey with 3:35 remaining. A Melvin free throw a few seconds later gave DePaul the lead back, and he managed to seal the victory in the final seconds by draining two more at the stripe.
DePaul was not very efficient from the foul line (19-of-34), but it was able to take 13 more attempts from the stripe than Auburn (14-of-21).
