ATLANTA - Mark Richt, famous for his even temper, had a prickly moment after Saturday's SEC championship loss.
During the postgame press conference, Richt had a testy exchange with a media member who asked about Richt and quarterback Aaron Murrays ability to win big games. Chuck Oliver, an Atlanta radio host, told Richt there are "some people, whether it's fans, media or whomever else" who will make further conclusions about Richt and Murray in big games.
I dont know what youre saying, Richt said. Why dont you just say it straight up what youre straight to say.
People will say, Oliver asked, that Richt and Murray come up short on the biggest stage against the biggest opponents.
Is that what youre saying or everybody else?" Richt replied.
Oliver replied that he was hearing that every day.
Well thats for you to worry about then, Richt said. If thats what you say, then Ill answer the question. If you think other people are saying that, Im not worried about that.
Richt got up to leave, but wasn't done yet.
I want to say something else. If anybody thinks our guys didnt play their tail off and Aaron Murray didnt play his tail off, they are crazy, he said. Thats unbelievable somebody would even bring that up.
Then Richt was done, leaving the stage and ending the postgame press conference.
Note: I wasn't there for this exchange. The postgame coaches' press conference occurs at the same time the Georgia locker room opens, so I and most beat writers were in the locker room. The above is from a transcript and an SEC video feed.
